Connection & Core Infrastructure

SIM Card & Plan

Stay connected from day one

You don't need a Social Security Number or credit history to get a US SIM card. Prepaid plans work immediately with just a payment. Avoid roaming on an Indian SIM as costs add up fast.

Insider Tip

"Ensure your phone is "unlocked" from your home country carrier before you land."

Mint Mobile

Best Value

Runs on T-Mobile network. Plans start at $15/month. Buy online with a debit card or eSIM. Best value for new arrivals.

Visible by Verizon

Best Coverage

Unlimited data on Verizon's network for $25/month. Superior coverage in rural areas.

T-Mobile Prepaid

Walk-in Ready

Available at Walmart, Target, or T-Mobile stores. Activates instantly. No ID required for cash purchase.

Bank Account

No SSN? No problem.

Most banks require an SSN, but several major institutions accept your passport, visa, and I-94 to help you establish your financial footprint immediately.

Insider Tip

"Bring your passport, visa, I-94, and a lease agreement or a letter from your employer as proof of temporary address."

Chase Bank

Most Recommended

Visit a branch with passport + visa. Ask for a "Total Checking" account. Widely accepted for direct deposits.

Capital One 360

Fee-Free

Excellent online banking with no monthly fees. Often allows SSN-pending applications or ITIN.

Wells Fargo / Bank of America

Branch Required

Both accept passport + visa at a branch. Ask specifically about their "no SSN" account opening process.

Initial Housing

Managing the first few nights

Before you sign a long-term lease, you'll need a temporary base. Look for options that don't require credit history or upfront deposits.

Insider Tip

"Don't book more than 2 weeks of temporary housing. You'll want to get into a permanent lease once you have your bank account settled."

Airbnb / Sonder

Reliable for the first 1-2 weeks. Use this time to visit long-term apartments in person.

Corporate Housing

Furnished apartments usually used by companies for relocated employees. No credit check required if paid via company.

Phase 2: Week 1–2

Establishing Official Presence

Social Security Number

The foundation of your US identity

Your SSN is required for employment, taxes, and most financial services. You should wait at least 10 days after entering the US before applying to ensure your immigration record is updated in the government's SAVE system.

Insider Tip

"Don't carry the card—memorize the number and keep the physical card in a high-security location at home."

Find an SSA Office

Use the official SSA office locator. Bring Passport, Visa, and a printed copy of your most recent I-94.

Form SS-5

Fill out the application at the office. The card arrives by mail in 7-14 days.

Driver's License & ID

Mobility and official identification

Most states allow you to drive on your foreign license for 30-90 days, but you must apply for a State ID or License quickly to avoid insurance and legal issues.

Insider Tip

"If your foreign license is in English, some states (like New Jersey or California) may have special rules for skipping the road test. Check local DMV site."

Knowledge Test

Start by studying your state's DMV handbook. Then pass the computer-based written test.

REAL ID

Apply for the REAL ID compliant version—it will serve as your ID for domestic flights in the future.

Permanent Housing

Securing an apartment without credit

Landlords usually want a US credit score. As a newcomer, you can often bypass this with proof of income or a slightly higher security deposit.

Insider Tip

"Avoid scams on Craigslist. Use Zillow, Apartments.com, or StreetEasy (NYC) for verified listings."

Offer Letter

If you have a job, your official offer letter is often accepted as "proof of ability to pay" instead of credit.

Guarantor Services

Services like Rhino or TheGuarantors act as your co-signer for a small monthly fee.

Phase 3: Month 1+

Optimizing Your New Life

Building Credit

Start your score from zero

In the US, your Credit Score determines your interest rates for cars and houses. Start building it early, even before your SSN arrives.

Insider Tip

"Rule #1: Never pay interest. Always pay your "Statement Balance" in full every single month."

Nova Credit

Game Changer

Translates your Indian (CIBIL), Mexican, or Canadian credit history directly to US lenders for premium cards.

US healthcare is expensive and complex. Find South Asian doctors who speak your language and understand your cultural and dietary background.

Urgent Care vs ER

Use Urgent Care for minor issues (fever). Use the ER only for life-threatening emergencies to avoid $5,000+ bills.

Sending Money Home

Avoid bank wire fees

Your US bank's international wire fee and exchange rate "spread" are almost always the worst options. Use specialized services instead.

Insider Tip

"Check IndicWave's Remittance Hub to compare live rates before every transfer."

Wise

Cheapest and most transparent. Mid-market rates. First transfer is usually free.
